Read for REED

May 2016 Newsletter

May 2016

We are happy to introduce a new monthly newsletter that will be distributed to REED families called, “READ for REED”. Included in the newsletter will be a note from me, a principal’s message, a note from the clinical team, development news, and a new section called Community News.  Over the past many months families have called to ask if they can “announce” information to the REED community, such as a small fundraiser a family is leading, exciting information about a project a REED student is involved with in their home, community, etc.  This is your chance to inform your REED friends about current happenings. If you would like to include information in this new seciton please email Lisa Goldstein at by the 3rd Friday of each month. Reminders from Angela in the main office will be sent out when the content for the newsletter is due.
I will see all families at our annual Bike Event fundraiser on May 22nd at Bergen Community College. Thanks for your continued fundraising efforts on behalf of the the students and staff at REED.
Finally, I am sending Mother’s Day wishes to all of our wonderful REED moms.  You deserve to be celebrated!  As moms you are loving, fearless, compassionate, talented, thoughtful and the best advocates for your children.  Enjoy your day, extra hugs and family time.  Happy Mother’s Day!!
My best,
We are excited to announce that we have completed the interview process for our two new Speech and Language Specialists and they have accepted the position beginning July 2016. Speech and language therapy is an important and beneficial addition to a program when integrated appropriately using ABA methodology.  Collaboration between all specialists will continue to help enhance the overall effectiveness of programing for our students. We are thrilled to welcome these new members to our team this fall.
REED FundRacers – We currently have 13 staff members registered for the Go the Distance Bike Event Team.  To date, the staff has raised an incredible $3,000. Keep up the great work!
Making new friends – Over the summer, McKenna, a young girl from Franklin Lakes contacted us about selling bracelets to raise some money to donate to REED. We received a check from our new friend and have since become penpals! We look forward to receiving and sending mail with McKenna. We most recently talked about some of our favorite games to play and McKenna had some great suggestions. We are excited to have McKenna join us over the summer to play on our playground.
Face Painting and Balloon Twisting – On Friday, April 22, REED students had so much fun getting face/hand painting and watching some live balloon twisting. The purchase of this service was donated by a staff member’s mother.

Years ago we held monthly Parent Coffee meetings hosted at REED. It was a chance for famlies to connect and socialize.  We are happy to announce that these coffee chats will resume this June. Our first Parent Coffee will be held Friday, June 3 from 9:30 – 11:30 am. Coffee Chats will be held the first Friday of each month at REED unless otherwise noted. A reminder will sent the Monday prior and please RSVP to Angela at
Looking forward to seeing you all.
Thank you to Ashley Tanzer for holding a Mitzvah Spin-a-Thon to benefit REED Academy in honor of her Bat Mitzvah this June.  The entire Tanzer family and all their friends participated on April 29 at Flywheel in Millburn, NJ.  Ashley raised over $3,000 for REED and had tons of fun while doing it!  Thank you to Ashley and all the Tanzer’s for supporting REED!
“REED is an amazing school for kids with autism and has really been important to my brother and to my family.  Because REED is such a big part of our lives, I wanted to raise money for the school.  They provide so many necessary services for the kids and make their lives so much better”  – Ashley Tanzer
If you are interested in running a peer to peer fundraiser for REED Academy that you would like publicized on the REED website, please contact Lisa Goldstein at
