Guiding Students and their families through Transition

Transition to A Less Restrictive Placement

If a student acquires the skills (e.g., learning readiness, academic, independence) that would allow them to be more effectively educated in a less restrictive placement, transition should be considered (e.g., to a public school program).

REED will coordinate with districts to the extent that a district desires to provide staff training, monitor data, implement environment-appropriate behavior support plans, and support efforts for increased socialization. If requested by the district, REED can provide a 1:1 aide to support the student in their transition placement or consultative services as appropriate.

Transition to Vocational Programming

Aligning with the NJDOE state standards, REED Academy provides extensive pre-vocational and vocational training. Our program offers comprehensive Work-Based Learning (WBL), which can help students age 16 and older to enhance their employability. Teens and young adults can sample various jobs in-house or off-site to help expand their experiences, which will ultimately lead them down the correct path in the adult world.

Our WBL program includes:

  • On-site WBL coordinator
  • Partnerships with a variety of businesses to increase job experience
  • Online data collection system to monitor progress
  • Highly skilled job coaches with intensive training

Transition to Adulthood

REED Next is a premier program that provides both day-program and residential services for individuals with autism. REED Next works closely with REED Academy to ensure that the information related to transitioning into adulthood is up-to-date. Doing so allows REED Academy to streamline information to REED Academy families and to stay current on changes that may occur on a state or national level.

Because REED Academy understands that the transition into adulthood can be a daunting task for families, REED Academy has developed an in-house adult transition guide that gives families crucial resources and information to help their child transition into the adult world.
